Workshop content and goals:

We will be reviewing basic theory and exploring practical strategies for addressing Trauma Recovery through Somatic Experiencing:

Attachment,
Arousal Regulation,
Self Regulation

Primitive Reflexes (overview)
Sensory Processing Disorder
Dissociation
Disease

This workshop will provide the opportunity for the participants to experience therapeutic interventions that promote the integration of the senses (oral, touch, proprioception, vestibular, visual and auditory).

The goal is to create a continuum for embodiment, self regulation and healing. These interventions are to be applied in conjunction with Somatic Experiencing intervention in order to strengthen pathways of changes and transformation.

The training will explore the utilization of sensory input to prevent autonomic cycling in between fight/flight (sympathetic) and freeze (parasympathetic) responses.  Strategies will support a healthy attachment and social engagement.  We will explore the concept of using sensory input to counter-act dissociation in conditions of anxiety, depression, mood disorder, irritable bowel, chronic pain, and other disorders associated to trauma.

"Ana Dovalle’s work in Sensory Integration provides important tools to help stabilize and “ground” children and adults with deep attachment and regulation problems. In this way she offers essential tools for Somatic Experiencing therapists. Ana shares her rich knowledge and wisdom drawn from her thirty years background as an Occupational Therapist specializing in Sensory Integration. She empowers practitioners to do more effective therapy with some of their most challenging clients.  Ana is both a gifted healer and an inspiring teacher, willing to share her knowledge and breadth of experience. I hope that you will avail yourself of her talents, her enthusiasm and her generosity of spirit".
---Peter A Levine, founder of Somatic Experiencing, and author of "awakening the tiger".

Workshop goals:

1.    Recognize the inter-connection between the body senses and auto/self-regulation and their importance in trauma recovery.
2.    Apply the Sensory Integration model (neurophysiology) for treating disorders of trauma, both mental and physical.
3.    Recognize the relationships between attachment disorder, developmental trauma, sensory processing disorder, and disease.
4.    Define and apply intervention techniques for treating Dissociation (relationship to the Polyvagal Theory and the dorsal vagal nucleus).
5.    Learn specific strategies to support down regulating the amygdala and integrating right and left hemispheres in the context of treating traumatic symptoms (emotional and physical).
6.    Recognize the power of rituals in treating trauma (coherent narrative of the self, neuro-physiological basis).

Workshop outline:
Day one
Theory review: Inter-connection in between Attachment Disorder, Arousal Spectrum, Sensory Processing Disorder, Developmental Trauma, Dissociation and Disease
Learn and experience ways the senses influence regulation in the autonomic nervous system: oral, auditory, vestibular, visual, touch and proprioception
Develop skills for addressing insecure and disorganized attachment disorder by utilizing the sensory approach model (children and adult / video analysis)

Day two:
Treating Panic disorder, Chronic Pain, Addictions and Sensory Modulation Disorders (neuro-transmittors)
Scoring the Sensory Profile and Developing a Sensory Awareness on a Routine Basis (demo and practicum)
Developing a coherent narrative for treating complex trauma (body/mind based):  focus on de-fragmentation and neuro-physiological integration (demo and practicum)
Treating states of discomfort:  pain, fatigue, overly active mind (demo and practicum). Sensory codes (demo & dyads, home program model)
The influence of rituals in Autonomic Regulation (group exercise)
